What to do when you get in an auto accident in California

1.       Pull over and STOP

                        a. No matter how minimal the accident, pull over. Hit-and-run fines are very high in California, and will result in paying more in the end.

2.       Check for injuries

                        a. The law requires that those involved give reasonable assistance to anyone injured in the accident. This may require you to drive them to the hospital or call an ambulance, depending on its severity. If the situation is very severe, call 911. They will send an ambulance and any other personnel needed to help.

3.       Exchange vehicle information with those involved in the accident, including:

                         a. The other driver’s name, driver’s license number, and insurance company.

                         b. The other car’s make, year, model, license plate number.

                         c. The names, telephone numbers and insurance companies of the other car’s legal and registered owners—if the driver does not own the car.

                        d. The name and badge number of the law officer who comes to the accident scene. Ask the officer where and   when you can get a copy of any accident report.

4.       Do NOT make statements of guilt or innocence at this time.

5.       You MUST have some proof of financial responsibility. Car insurance is the most common form of proof.
