The Other Alimony: The Immigration Affidavit of Support in California Divorce Cases
When: July 9th, 2026, from 12:00 PM
Where: Online (Zoom)
MCLE: 1.0 Hour General
This one-hour session is based on Marriage of Kumar, and how it can impact spousal support in California. Some family-sponsored immigrants have enforceable financial rights under the Affidavit of Support in State and/or Federal court, and it is important for immigration attorneys to properly advise both petitioner & beneficiary during a marriage-based case. It is equally important for family law attorneys to understand the potential support issues in a case with a green card holder and to know when to collaborate with an immigration attorney.
Speakers: Kraig Rice and Gregory McLawsen
Kraig Rice is the principal of Santa Barbara Immigration Lawyers Inc. and a California State Bar certified legal specialist in Immigration & Nationality Law. In addition to managing a busy immigration firm, he teaches Immigration Law as an adjunct faculty member at The Colleges of Law.
Gregory McLawsen represents low-income immigrants in federal lawsuits to enforce the USCIS Form I-864 Affidavit of Support. Greg has represented clients from more than 25 states and litigates claims nationwide.
